AUSTIN (KXAN) - Earth Day is this weekend, and when it comes to recycling, Austin is one of the top cities in the nation. However, the city's Solid Waste Services does not offer some recycling services to businesses, which has led one Austinite to start a new business to fill a niche. "I started talking to more business owners who were saying that the city didn't provide recycling services, and I figured I could easily do it," said Bob McGivney, owner of Wandering River Recycling. In the middle of the night Bob McGivney found himself driving through town with a truck full of flowers. He wasn't going to surprise his girlfriend or decorate his home — he was recycling them.
His midnight run sprouted from a lazy summer afternoon at Barton Springs with friends, one of whom was a wedding planner. While talking to her, he found out that all the flowers used at weddings — including one that was coming up — are typically thrown away, despite their weeklong lifespan after an event. AUSTIN (KXAN) - Last year, Austinite Bob McGivney decided to start a small recycling business. The goal: To help small apartments and businesses that weren't serviced from the city to recycle their paper, cans and plastic. Since then, his business has increased 10 times and become the only independent business in Austin that does single-stream recycling.
